There's a certain something when it comes to a playhouse theater. Something about sitting in the dark, waiting for the lights to come up, a heavy velvet curtain brushes aside our disbelief and we are suspended in the story. Even more for the actor backstage. The flurry to get into position, the adjusting of costumes or wigs, the deep breath before stepping into the bright, hot lights. It feels like the magic will last forever, but inevitably, the lights come down, the curtains drawn, and silence descends on the empty house.
2020 was a dark year for many of us. As in times past, when a pandemic passes over us, the theaters were shuttered until it was safe to return. Here we are, two years hence, and we are all ready to have the magic back in our lives. We are all beginning to emerge into the lights again and immerse ourselves in the magic around us.
The Belrose is ready too. This theater has had a long and eccentric life here in downtown San Rafael, CA offering shows, dance classes, afternoon teas and open mic nights for decades. Its history is long and varied, and deserves its own post, but today it's all about the return to magic.
What that means for us now is a refresh and relaunch of our costume rental shop. Founded in the 80s by Margie Belrose and her son, David, the shop offers some of the most unique theatrical and historical costumes available in Marin County.
In years past, we have been the go-to costume rental for hundreds of fundraisers and private parties, from Downton Abbey themed to 1920s flapper galas. Halloween is our busiest time of year, and when you've got everything from pirates to Elvis, the variety of options are always a draw! With the Bridgerton Experience happening in San Francisco right now, we have seen loads of folks coming in to get outfitted in their Regency Era dream wear.
The shop offers reasonable rental prices and so many accessories to choose from that your costume will look and feel like you stepped out of the pages of a fairy tale or a character from history with next to no effort. You'll be ready to take that deep breath, step out into the brightness and soak up the adoration of the crowds.
The overture is beginning. Come join us for the next act!
